Swimming pools in New South Wales are now required to be registered. Home owners have twelve months to register their pools and face heavy fines if they fail to do so. Of significance for home sellers and property investors is the requirement that swimming pools must be checked by the local council prior to a property being listed for sale or lease.
The amendments to the swimming pool legislation has been introduced in reaction to the level of drownings or water related incidents in backyard swimming pools over the past years. NSW has been slower to act than the state of Queensland who introduced stringent legislation in 2010.
