Short Point Why live in Short Point? History The first inhabitants of the Short Point Merimbula area were the Yuin people. White settlement occurred in the 1830s with large parcels of far south coast land leased by the Imlay brothers. Communities developed on the south coast however in the Merimbula area the community centre developed around the Pambula river. In the mid 1800s the construction of the wharf, sale of land parcels and the activities of an enterprising miller assisted the Merimbula township to develop. Growth was slow however the promotion of Merimbula as a holiday destination in the 1960s assisted. Short Point is located on the high north / north easterly side of Merimbula. It is a well known part of Merimbula due in part to the excellent caravan park located close to the Short Point beach and the famous surfing and swimming conditions that attract water-sport lovers from near and afar. Holiday homes are popular in Short Point however savvy locals have also snapped up real estate gaining an enviable lifestyle of access to beach, views and a five minute drive or walk to Merimbula. Real Estate & Design Short Point real estate is a mixture of locally owned property and holiday homes. Merimbula locals with a love of beach and views have snapped up real estate in this area and either renovated or demolished to build substantial and modern residences. Older style homes are still available however are gradually being replaced. Holiday homes have either been maintained in original condition or have been completely rebuilt to maximise the potential of the land. The holiday home market is one of interest with many owners renting their properties over the main tourism season for often, very lucrative rates. The older style houses in Shortpoint are weatherboard or red brick and can be sourced on traditional quarter acre sections. Shortpoint is a select real estate area with a number of opportunities for the savvy purchaser. Shopping Short Point is a five minute drive or stroll to the Merimbula township. Full shopping services are provided at Merimbula however larger grocery chains are available at the new Tura Beach shopping centre. Sports & Fitness Merimbula has a wide choice of sporting activities available. The area is a natural playground and residents take full advantage of the close proximity to beaches and lakes. Nearby Bournda and Ben Boyd national parks provide excellent walking, hiking and cycling tracks and camping opportunities. Team sports are played on the nearby Berrimbool oval, Pambula Beach oval or the Merimbula netball courts located on Fishpen. A heated swimming pool available for lessons, swim training and fitness exercises is available at Pambula Beach. Distance from Cities & Transportation Short Point is a five minute drive or slightly longer walk to Merimbula. State and Interstate bus lines run daily services to Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney from Bega and Merimbula. The Merimbula airport has daily flights to Sydney and Melbourne. Some local bus services are provided however these may be limited. Full bus services are provided for school children. Famous Landmarks Short Point beach is a landmark with residents and visitors. A long expanse of sandy shore and excellent swimming, snorkelling and surfing conditions make it a very popular area, particularly in the summer months. The beach stretches to Tura Beach and is a peaceful walk. Restaurants & Cafes Merimbula has a wide array of restaurants, cafes and club food. Many international cuisines are available. Coffee and breakfast can be had while overlooking the picturesque Merimbula Lake or meals enjoyed from the comfort of restaurants with panoramic views over the lake and ocean. Schools, Education & Institutions Primary aged school children attend the state provided Merimbula Public primary school. Private options are available at the Catholic primary schools located in Pambula and Bega and the Anglican primary campus at Pambula. Secondary aged students attend the Eden Marine High School or have the private options of the Lumen Christi Catholic College at Pambula or the Sapphire Coast Anglican College Bega campus. TAFE facilities are provided at Bega and for those wishing to undertake university studies the University of Wollongong now has a campus in Bega and has several degrees on offer.
