Lochiel Why Live in Lochiel? History Lochiel is a locality near South Pambula and Nethercote, and the land was originally used for dairy farming. The mand is fertile, well irrigated by valleys and in the past has supported a strong farming community. Dairying flourished in the Bega Vally Shire and by 1848 there were dairies operating out of the region. Along woth the regions ports, the local economy continued to grow and by the 1860s the famous Bega Cheese was first produced. Despite many surrounding coastal towns turning to the lucrative tourism market to help boost flagging local industries, Lochiel and its surrounding areas maintain a solid agricultural foundation.Real Estate and Design Many of the properties in Lochiel are farm houses. There are new houses being built, but many are away from the road and exclusively located. Materials like mud brick and timber are used to ensure the houses fit in with the surrounding natural bushland and display Lochiel’s rustic and rural atmosphere. Some recently built properties have modern designs and are structured to take in the spectacular hill views or the untouched Australian bushland. The area is littered with farms on acreage, sheds and hobby farms, and shows passers-by how peaceful country life in regional NSW can be. Shopping The area is only 8 minutes away from the small village of Pambula, where you can explore organic foods in colonial aged buildings, sample organic extremely tasty bakery goods at the local baker and buy some of the best tasting meat at the local butcher. Pambula is home to a one of the areas largest furniture and carpet shops along with a number of small industrial enterprises. A local grocery store, bank, newsagency and post office is available in the center of Pambula. Larger supermarket chains, fashion shops, books and toy shops are located in Merimbula, only 20 minutes from Lochiel. Sports and Fitness Lochiel is a great locality for bushwalking, cycling and motorbike riding. There are numerous fire trails that are perfect for the quiet bushwalk, or motorbike riding if you are into a louder sport. The roads are quiet and offer the perfect opportunity for cyclists to ride from Pambula to Eden, off the highway. Swimming holes are scattered throughout the area, but the most popular location is the Nethercote Falls. The native flora and fauna is beautiful and abundant, this is the perfect location for bird watching. Possibly the most noticeable birds are the colourful parrots, including Crimson Rosellas, Eastern Rosella, Gang-gang Cockatoos and Rainbow Lorikeets. The hills are alive with the sounds of lyrebirds, and they are often seen scurrying across the main road or scratching along the road edges, and can be found right through the forests. Distance from Cities and Transportation Lochiel is approximately 3 hours from Canberra, 6-7 hours to Sydney and 7 hours from Melbourne. Pambula is only 15 minutes away and it takes just 18-20 minutes to arrive in Merimbula. State and Interstate bus services provide daily services to Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra from Pambula or Merimbula. Merimbula airport has daily flights to Melbourne and Sydney. There are limited bus services for public transportation however full bus services are provided for all school aged children. Famous Landmarks Nethercote Falls are located about 2.2 km north-east of the Nethercote Community Hall, of either Nethercote Road or Back Creek Road, or alternatively, 8 to 15km south-west of Pambula . Nethercote Falls are a series of cascades linking a chain of round pools in the rock which range from 1m-10m in diameter. The area is of tremendous scientific interest and is relatively undisturbed. The falls are spectacular and the whole area is of great natural beauty. If you are looking for a day’s outing, it’s hard to beat the stunning Nethercote Falls. To get to Nethercote Falls head down Back Creek road, and turn off at Pipe Clay road. Follow the signs until you come to a car park and BBQ area – this is no more than 1 km from the main road. Turn right down the hill and park your car in the small carpark at the bottom. There is a ten minute bushwalk to the falls, that can be difficult on hot days, but it is worth the effort. Restaurants and Cafes The nearest cafes and restaurants are in Pambula, only 15 minutes away. Schools, Education and Institutions Primary aged school children attend either the local state primary school in Eden or Pambula. Secondary aged children attend the state provided Eden Marine High School or travel to Pambula Beach to attend Lumen Christi Catholic School.
