Quarantine Bay
Why Live In Quarantine Bay?
History-
Quarantine Bay is known for its reflective beaches, distinguished boat ramp and as the home of the Twofold Bay Yacht club. In 1961, after a rapid increase in interest and participation in sailing and power boating in the district, a meeting was held with the objective of forming a sailing and powerboat club. This was attended by Eden and Merimbula boat owners, and members of the Wallagoot Lake Boat Club. The Eden Aquatic Club was formed with the objective of catering for both sailing and power boating. The first interclub event was a sailing challenge with eleven boats taking part. Interest steadily increased and the Eden Aquatic Club changed its name to the Twofold Bay Yacht Club in 1976. In 1982-83 the clubhouse was completed. Over the next 20 years, the yacht club continued to provide racing, cruising and social events for local sailors, as well as running state and national titles. The club’s current boating activities embrace keel boat and off the beach racing, cruising & social activities. All classes & types of boats are welcome & a varied sailing program is offered between September and April each year. Membership is open to both junior and senior members.
Real Estate and Design-
Situated 3 kilometres south of Eden, the locality is quiet and peaceful. It is surrounded by bushland yet close to town, and is the perfect location for a sea change. The coastal houses take advantage of the spectacular views on offer and all are surrounded by natural bushland. No blocks have been completely cleared and native flora is abundant. The properties are exclusive and cannot seen from the road. They have contemporary designs that are subtle, to ensure they continue to blend with the natural settings.
Shopping-
Quarantine Bay is only a 3 minute drive to Eden, north along the Princes Highway. Eden township caters for locals and tourist, with supermarkets, niche delis, local butchers, cafes, restaurants and clubs. The main shopping area of Imlay Street provides a mixture of necessity and boutique shopping.
Sports and Fitness-
Locals and visitors make the most of the many National Parks in the area and take the time to explore by foot, bike, boat or kayak. The boat ramp is excellent with 4 lanes giving access to Twofold Bay and the open sea. There are 2 jetties, fish cleaning tables, moorings, toilets, picnic area and a quiet sandy beach. The yacht club is family oriented, promoting sailing in a relaxed social atmosphere, and offers sailing activites to residents of the Sapphire Coast. Twofold Bay is one of the world's deepest natural harbours, making it an ideal sailing venue. The Club's Sailing Season starts in October and runs through to May each year. Races are generally held on Sundays.
Distance From Cities and Transportation-
Eden is an approximate three hour drive from the city of Canberra, and is located six-seven hours driving north of Melbourne or six hours south of Sydney.
The local airport is located 20 minutes away north of Eden and is serviced by regular daily flights to Melbourne and Sydney. Interstate, Regional and local bus services are available. Traffic issues are not usually a concern in this relaxed area, although during the peak visitor period over Christmas delays can occur on the Pambula to Eden road.
Famous Landmarks-
The most visible landmark from Quarantine Bay is Mount Imlay. Aboriginal people know the mountain as Balawan, a powerful and spiritual place of great significance. The mountain is named after the three Imlay brothers, who played an important part in opening the Eden-Monaro district to European settlement in the 1830s and 40s. The top of Mount Imlay offers great views of the coast and forest, and the summit area supports a population of extremely rare Eucalyptus imlayensis. Access to the Mt. Imlay summit track is through the East Boyd State Forest via the Burawang Forest Road, that leaves the Princes Hwy 19km south of Eden. Bush camping and rough bushwalking are provided for in the park. Sturdy shoes should be worn on all walks here, particularly on the steep track to the summit of the mountain. Walkers should also carry water with them as there is none available along this route.
Restaurants and Cafes-
The local clubs offer reasonable meals and are also suited for family dining. Some restaraunts in Eden offer fresh, local seafood and produce from the area. There are two Chinese restaurants in the town, as well as fish and chips and pizzas. The local pub’s verandah has amazing ocean views and well-priced, fresh meals. Many of the Motels have restaurants attached, and there is plenty of fresh seafood to purchase at the wharf and cook on a BBQ at the Apex park, overlooking Aslings Beach and the ocean.
Schools, Education and Institutions-
Eden Primary School is the main primary school catering for the Eden area. There are only two state secondary schools in the area, and high school students travel either to the Bega High School or Eden Marine High School. Private college students attend the local Catholic College in Pambula Beach or the Sapphire Coast Anglican College in Bega. Eden Marine High School is one of two high schools in NSW offering marine studies as a subject. The students participate in Surf Life Saving, scuba diving, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, surfing and swimming. The school has a fully functional agricultural centre with vegetable gardens, animals and tractor, offering the students variety and a fun approach to learning.
